The Evolution of Social Pressure
An eye-opening, feel-good take on the evolution of social pressure...
It seems inevitable that the social pressure we witness in todays society is like an ever-expanding balloon, and with each breath that humanity takes into the future, it’s pretty challenging to tell if you’re at popping point or are finally deflating. From earning ready money for keeping up with the cost of, well, simply existing, to constantly feeling like we have to keep seeking new ways to do things in order to impress other people and satisfy ourselves, as methods of getting along in life that have already been used are usually thought of as ‘old’ and ‘unoriginal’. This means new generations only just taking their first steps into life are expected to become something that no one else has ever seen before, meaning more pressure to achieve heights that no one has ever reached before as being anything less than what previous efforts have accomplished are no longer valid or adequate. Expectations of becoming something the world has never witnessed before as if you are the second coming of Jesus, a redeemer that people can discover answers to questions that have been asked for years upon years and no one has ever been able to find a solution up until now, because you know everything there is about anything, right?

And that’s where reality kicks in. It was never destiny that you were born to single-handedly cure the world from the deadliest diseases, or find the solution to global warming, or to go deep into a jungle to discover a temple and find out the answer to, ‘what came first, the chicken or the egg?’ (it was the egg… no wait, chicken! No wait, egg… wait?). Hey, if you’re determined enough to find these answers, then go for it, that’s your call. This piece isn’t called, ‘I’m no.1, so why try harder?’ and to deter you away from trying to accomplish your goals, as in order to make it where you feel comfortable in life, it does take effort. However, this should be at your own pace, never at the expectation of the heavens above opening up a crack of light in the sky to shine down on you, letting people know you’ve made it, slowly as you ascend upwards to the clouds as everyone claps and smiles at you, cheering as you suddenly realise, “Oh no, I’m too high, someone help me down from here! AAH!”.

Then you then realise no one is there to rescue you, comprehending that it was only ever about pleasing other people rather than fulfilling a path that made you truly happy, even if it meant scrapping the ‘destiny’ you were meant to follow all at the super low cost of your sanity, mental health, public image, status and a rewarding beam from above to signal that you made it to a place where no other human could even dream about… sorry, where no other human could ever bother to reach as they were too busy living a life of their own. It would strike you to think that when you were aiming for the “biggest goal” that the world could ever offer, others were achieving their own desires that were just as rewarding without the expense of going above and beyond breathing. They know that even the smallest goals in life can provide just as much joy as the ones the flashy ‘Hollywood’ sign emits over Los Angeles.

Again, some goals in life will take more effort that other goals as that’s life, and it just comes down to how much you’re willing to put in. However, it doesn’t mean that being something bigger will make you more important than everyone else, as at the end of the day, we are all individuals looking for a way to make a future that suits us. You wouldn’t expect to fit into your Dad’s tuxedo/dress at the age of six, so why would you expect to fit into the lifestyle of how someone else who has already made it? I’ll go ahead and spoil it for you, it’s simply not possible. Ok, if you fancy becoming an actor just like Jodie Comer, Leonardo DiCaprio or Ryan Reynolds, there are always paths you can follow to make a name for yourself in that sector of life. However, just realise that you will never be them. The reason for that is because, surprise, you are an individual on your own path making a name for yourself. You can be inspired by those who have made it, sure, but just realise that being you is a superpower, something that no one else can take away from you. If you haven’t figured out what that power is yet, it’s a little something called having an identity and moulding out your future the way you see fit.

And it’s just that simple, no one can ever take that away from you, and the same goes for every other individual out there too. If you or anyone else decides to become a coffee shop owner, that’s a choice no one else has a say in. If you want to become a writer, then again, that’s your destiny to oversee.

It’s all about making sure that you can fit walk a path that makes you feel comfortable, rather than conforming to the evolution of social pressure, because it was never an option to become anything else. Make sure to stay true to yourself, and support the ideas of other people without passing judgement, as it’s just as important to remember that everyone is also on this planet to care, love and support one another without putting down ideas that one feels to be their calling. No idea is a bad idea, and the only idea that is a bad idea is giving up on the way you form your own identity simply because someone says, “Well hold on, are you sure that’s how you want to go about it?” or “I don’t know, are you sure you don’t want to be something bigger than XYZ?”.

Whatever your goal, no matter how big or small it is, don’t let social pressure tell you to do something different in order to make it. And, that light in the sky to make you ascend into the heavens above? That can wait, because you’ve got something just as important to aim for… being you.
